New Exhibition Fall 2011 - AG Gallery

Collages:
Maureen Shields Solo Exhibition

Sept. 2 - Oct. 30, 2011
Opening Night: Friday, Sept 2, 6 - 9 PM

AG Gallery/About Glamour in Williamsburg is pleased to present
a solo exhibition by a unique college artist, Maureen Shields.
We exhibit one of her signature artworks, collages on wood panels and on vintage dish plates at this show.

The intent of her work is twofold. First, she hopes to initially attract and ideally seduce, as well as engage the viewer with surface, color, and beautiful and interesting objects. The tone of her work is often at first glance innocent and cheerful. Second, what follows this initial reception of a playful, nearly saccharine veneer is a deeper invitation into a strangely constructed world. The viewer is caught between a delight in the fantastic and a sense of unease or menace. The animal motifs she employs in the work, often times emphasizes the idea of the animal kingdom rather than actual wildlife. Her art works to balance between the whimsical, the grotesque, and the commonplace. She hopes to skew perspective and she seeks to reintroduce the strangeness and complexity associated with childhood without projecting directly onto the specific.

Summer Exhibition 2011: "The Anti-Glass Art 2011 in New York"

SUMMER EXHIBITION SERIES 2011
"The Anti-Glasswork Art 2011 in New York"
Takao Sakata Solo Exhibition
August 19- 24, 2011

AG Gallery/About Glamour is pleased to announce that we are having a solo exhibition by Takao Sakata, Japan based glasswork artist, "The Anti-Glasswork Art 2011 in New York" from August 19th through 24th, as a part of the Summer Exhibition Series of Japanese Artists 2011.

"When we look at the glasswork art in these days, I can only see weak, cheap, and flatter works.
They are called "modem grass art" or "the world grass art" and seen as if they are the real art.
Glass artisans without strong belief and knowledge and the lack of outstanding glasswork art critics obstruct making progress of the art.
The substantial of art is to express nature, society and human beings through clear sense and technics. It means the attribute of glass material doesn't produce any arts.
Marcel Duchamp, a French artist, signed that people in this century has been blind completely to the art. It is also the severe critism to the modern glass art. " ---Takao Sakata

Summer Exhibition 2011: "SAMPLING PROCESS"

SUMMER EXHIBITION SERIES 2011

"SAMPLING PROCESS"

RYO MIKAMI

SOLO EXHIBITION

August 12 - 17, 2011

AG Gallery is pleased to present "SAMPLING PROCESS", the solo exhibition of Ryo Mikami. "SAMPLING PROCESS" will feature live performance, using a Japanese comic and try to capture a true figure of sub consciousness.

Mikami chooses Japanese comics to capture subconscious by cutting and digging down according to outline of each frame of comics. He creates a silent and calm world that is closely overlapping of comics at the micro level.

"In this work, I am literally "cutting frames", which makes it no longer possible for readers to follow the story, and allows them to only see some meaningless pieces of drawings. In the limited objects to see, however, they may see strugglesand personalities of the author, which appears when wondering how to make frames, especially in the pattern made by an "accident" of being put together after being cut into pieces. The pattern presents the subconscious of the author of the comic, subconscious of myself who cut them into pieces, and subconscious of viewers of the work. For example, musicians who improvise music may make and stick to certain rules in order for them to create music without interruption of their playing habits and emotions. I tried the idea in "SAMPLING PROCESS"." - Ryo Mikami

Ryo Mikami
Born in Kawasaki City, Japan in 1983.
He grew up in Buenos Aires, Argentina and in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. After he graduated from Tokyo University of the Arts in 2008, he ended up finishing graduate School of Film and New Media Tokyo University of the Arts in March 2011.

Live Cutting Performance is held every day 4-8 during the exhibistion.

"SAMPLING PROCESS" will be on view at AG Gallery from August 12th through 17th, 2011. For further information of this exhibition, please contact via email: samplingprocess@gmail.com .
