AG Gallery "The Strange Hearts Club" | Interview with Philippa Rice

The Strange Hearts Club
Cat Rabbit & Philippa Rice
Sep.15 - Oct. 4, 2016

I am happy and very excited to see this exhibition came true as one of the staff members at About Glamour. This is a special treat for us to exhibit two artists in one exhibition. Their imaginary characters are not only cute, but also they give you a feeling of being alive.

In this blog I would like to share the interview from the inspiring illustrator, comic author, and animation artist, Phillipa Rice. Next blog will be an interview with Cat Rabbit, an unique textile artist, so Please come back and make sure to chick it out!

Philippa Rice at her studio

Q 1 - Please tell us a little bit about your background…
I studied animation at university, and after that I started making comics in my spare time. I eventually managed to make comics into my full-time job, after self publishing some books of my online comics. Since then I have also worked with publishers and also take on freelance work at times.

Q 2 -What was the first work of art that you saw or experienced that you still remember today?
When I was little I loved all the animations on TV made with models. I used to love watching repeats of the Bagpuss and The Clangers.

Q3 -Who were your earliest influencers of famous artists or creators?
Oliver Postgate and Peter Firmin who made Bagpuss!

Q4 -Please tell us about your work... -What do you make?
I started making a webcomic called My Cardboard Life in 2008. I used collage materials like paper and cardboard to make the panels and characters. I also draw a lot of comics, including my autobio comic Soppy. I really enjoy all kinds of crafts especially crochet and model making. I have made a lot of characters and use them to make animations for my youtube channel Soft Spot.

Q5 -What generally inspires or influences you to create your work?
I'm inspired by lots of different things, but particularly by real life events and moments that I write down in my diary and then later illustrate it or turn it into something else.
I also love anything cute or silly and if I can include things like that in my stories or characters then I'm happy.

Q6 -What is the main challenge for you when creating your work?
I often try to work on too many things at once and it's difficult to say focused and get anything finished, especially when real life gets in the way too.

Q7 -What are you currently working on?
I've almost finished a new book which is a sort of sequel to Soppy, but instead of being about me, it's a guided journal so that people can fill it in with their own stories.

Q8 -What is your dream or goal as an artist in 3 years? 5 years?
If I name a specific dream I'm sure it won't come true! I hope that in 5 years time I'll still be making as many comics and animations as I am now!

Lastly, Do you have any message to visitors for this exhibition?
I hope you enjoy our show. Say hi to all the characters from me!
I have made several crochet characters, a few different types of animals. There are also sculpey models which I've painted and varnished. There are prints and also original collages made from different papers, with paint details. And the animations to watch too! Hopefully all the different things will give you a good idea of the different mediums I like to work in.

Thank you for reading our exclusive interview with Philippa!
We look forward to your visit at AG Galley.

Artistic Island in Japan!

I recently went to a small island in Japan called "Naoshima." Naoshima has beautiful nature and art. It has several museums, and some outside art projects.

The most famous art work on the island is the "Red Punpkin" by Kusama Yayoi. That's a cute huge pumpkin with dots, which are trademark of her works. There are no other places that have nature along with such a rich artworks. I really recommend to visit here if you have chance to come Japan!

At the end, some of you knows that Japan was hit by natural disasters, such as earthquakesvolcanic eruptions and floods, and they reminds us that we are just a small part of nature. I wish the safety and health of my loving people.

100 Days of Winter - AG Gallery

New Exhibition by Rachelle Tolwin

ONE HUNDRED DAYS OF WINTER

March 31 - April 29, 2012
Opening Reception: March 31, 6 - 9PM

For Immediate Release
AG Gallery/About Glamour in Williamsburg is pleased to present a solo exhibition,
“One Hundred Days of Winter,” by Rachelle Tolwin. All the works are from her project in this winter
which is the document of  her daily creation process on a mountain days.

Rachelle Tolwin’s tumblr blog description reads:
“this will be my first winter living on a mountain in the Catskill mountain state
park. I plan to document each day of the winter with art that I made that day.
Some days may be really cold. Some days there may be no internet access.
I will still make something regardless of the conditions and post it
when I am connected to the world-wide web and all of you.”

Rachelle moved to a remote area of the Catskill Mountains with her husband, Chaim, last Summer from Brooklyn.
She looked to the Winter as a time to reflect and focus on art and decided to start www.onehundreddaysofwinter.tumblr.com.
Her daily artwork chronicles this time through playful, introspective work clearly inspired by
her new surroundings and connection with nature.
Most of the work in one hundred days of winter is on paper, with gouache, watercolor and collage.
There are a few photographs that help situate her setting.
The title of the show may suggest images of snow and a white landscape, but these types of images do not dominate the show.
One reason may be there was not as much snow as expected this year.
Most of the works are colorful and reflect the inward and outward journey Rachelle experienced.
The work in this show presents a mystical, whimsical landscape that Rachelle lives in or imagines.

Rachelle Tolwin
Rachelle Tolwin lives and works in Sundown, NY, a small hamlet in the Catskill Mountains.
She received her MFA from California College of the Arts and her BS from New York University.
She enjoys making imagined landscapes on paper and has shown her work nationally and internationally.
Her work can be viewed at rachellecohen.com.

The opening reception for “One Hundred Days of Winter” will be held on
Saturday, March 31 at AG Gallery from 6 to 9 p.m.
The exhibition will be on view through Sunday, April 29, 2012.
Check details about Opening Reception at Facebook event page.

AG Gallery/About Glamour in Williamsburg is pleased to present a group exhibition, “PLANE & SOLID,”
by emerging artists Denis Andernach, Lynsey Hunter,  Jason Kachadourian,
Virginia Kraljevic, Ben and Sebastian, and Nicolas and Sofie.

All the works on this exhibition have in it some of the elements of “Architecture” in different ways.
Even before we discovered the beauty of architecture and started to studying and experimenting it
as an academic topic or media of art, humanity have been trying to create tons of architectural designs
in different shapes and materials for its purpose of use and intellectual climate.
Also, architecture have always been considered a part of landscapes and one of major subjects for artworks.

Because architecture has both aspects as being an artwork itself and a subject for artwork,
also naturally it has phases form 2D image on blue print to 3D structure when it built,
the works selected for this exhibition have a variety of media and shapes from plane to solid.

Artists in PLANE & SOLID:

DENIS ANDERNACH
Denis Andernach is an architect and illustrator living and working in Germany.
He creates all black and white drawing of landscape houses using clearly defined sharp lines
which would be considered formal studies in idealized landscape.

LYNSEY HUNTER
Graphic designer & Illustrator based in South Leicestershire, where she lives with her boyfriend and their crazy cat.
She loves to draw anything that inspires her, this is mostly any interesting architecture.
Her illustration use an eclectic mix of printed papers, quirky vintage imagery, old–fashioned fabrics,
stitch work and her own style of linear drawing mixed with watercolors and collags.

JASON KACHADOURIAN
Live and work in Brooklyn, NY. His work, in a broad sense, analyzes the blurred line between natural and artificial,
but more specifically deals with the chaotic organization that reigns in a city like New York.
The pieces vary in medium and media, but closely follow a set of guidelines and
ideas that make them cohesive when shown together.

VIRGINIA KRALJEVIC
Illustrator and visual designer based in New York City. After studying in Paris and New York,
she worked alongside some of the world’s most renowned names in publishing, fashion, retail, and television.
Her pen and ink drawings and custom illustration will be on view.

BEN AND SEBASTIAN
The partners behind the interdisciplinary art duo 'benandsebastian' are Ben Clement and Sebastian de la Cour.
They are based in Berlin and have been exhibited in gallery and museum contexts
in Berlin, Copenhagen, London, Milan and Tokyo.
The duo is currently exhibiting at The Museum of Art and Design in Copenhagen and
in May they start a 4 months residency at the ISCP (International Studio and Curatorial Program)  in Brooklyn.

NICOLAS AND SOFIE
"Bewilder & Pine is a dream collective of four making hands, one big black cat, and countless fear-eating-love-machines."
They are two artists and one cat (Mr. Burnside) who found each other in the wilds of the Great Northwest.
Their creation shares some of the mysterious and wonderful things that pass through their hands.

“PLANE & SOLID”exhibition will be on view through Sunday, March 25, 2012.

New Exhibition Fall 2011 - AG Gallery

Collages:
Maureen Shields Solo Exhibition

Sept. 2 - Oct. 30, 2011
Opening Night: Friday, Sept 2, 6 - 9 PM

AG Gallery/About Glamour in Williamsburg is pleased to present
a solo exhibition by a unique college artist, Maureen Shields.
We exhibit one of her signature artworks, collages on wood panels and on vintage dish plates at this show.

The intent of her work is twofold. First, she hopes to initially attract and ideally seduce, as well as engage the viewer with surface, color, and beautiful and interesting objects. The tone of her work is often at first glance innocent and cheerful. Second, what follows this initial reception of a playful, nearly saccharine veneer is a deeper invitation into a strangely constructed world. The viewer is caught between a delight in the fantastic and a sense of unease or menace. The animal motifs she employs in the work, often times emphasizes the idea of the animal kingdom rather than actual wildlife. Her art works to balance between the whimsical, the grotesque, and the commonplace. She hopes to skew perspective and she seeks to reintroduce the strangeness and complexity associated with childhood without projecting directly onto the specific.

*her works on our silent auction.

Maureen Shields
Born in San Gabriel, CA.

2004 MFA at New York University
2000 BFA at California State University

She lives and works in San Francisco, CA. Her successful eight solo exhibitions were held in California and New York through 1994 to 2011. Her artworks also made appearance in various group exhibitions, mainly held in California. Her signature artworks are colleges on different materials such as wood panels and vintage plates.

The opening reception will be held at AG Gallery/About Glamour on September 2, from 6 to 9 p.m.
Please stop in and enjoy the artworks with friends.
The exhibition will be on view through October 30, 2011.
